Harness Racing horseman Ray Reekie had to wait until the final race of the day at the Rangiora Harness Racing Club's meeting held at Addington Raceway today (Tuesday) to register his first official tote win in this country.

A licenced trainer and amateur driver Reekie led the amateur brigade a merry chase in the final race of the day behind the Lew Driver trained Nightime Magic. The son of Falcon Seelster was sent to the front early by Reekie who was able to stack the opposition with a sedate pace.

Into the straight for the final time the pair were always going to be hard to peg back, cruising home by 3/4 length in a placid 3.20 for the 2600 mobile. Having already saluted the judge in an official tote race in the USA, the result was still a satisfying result for the semi-retired scrap metal merchant.

"It's probably the best 3 1/2 minutes in harness racing I have every six months," he laughed. A genuine enthusiast for the sport the Leeston horseman finds time to train three horses at any given time with son John taking over the reins behind his business Lakeside Metals Ltd.

"Im lucky to have john doing 80% of the work now which gives me more time with the horses and other interests." Reekie had no luck earlier in the day Franco Nartiscape (4 wins) which he trains along with Franco Radial (3 wins) and a Christian Cullen filly from well performed racemare Show No Mercy (3 wins).

Top Sire: Sundon 2 wins.
