A Woodlands Northern Derby heat participant in the form of Another Matter was expected to take care of the New Zealand Community Trust Mobile Pace - a one-win event for junior drivers - but another Derby contender had other ideas.

Nightime Magic was a solid sixth in his Derby heat on February 22 – less than seven lengths off the eventual Northern Derby champion, Fiery Falcon – but favourites opted to go for the Steven Reid-trained Another Matter on the tote, closing at $1.90 when they lined up at Hawera over 1900m today (March 22).

However, the big fillip for the 3-Year-Old Falcon Seelster gelding Nightime Magic was the draw of two, and reinsman Charles Driver, who was in the sulky for one of Nightime Magic's two previous wins, promptly ensured he found the front.

Simon McMullan, driving Another Matter from the seven barrier, opted to head forward and put pressure on the leader for the second half of the race and at the turn, those in behind would have been fancying their chances.

One of those, Mythology, found a rails run and might have expected to sneak through and score for driver Anna Stormont, but Falcon Seelster's progeny tend to have some toughness about them.

The win wasn't secured either, as Mister Croker loomed up on the outside, but the only foal of the Jaguar Spur mare Verde to make it to the races to date dug deep again to withstand the challengers and win in 2.27.4

Trainer Lew Driver is clearly enamoured with Nightime Magic, as he paid $9000 for a half-brother to Nightime Magic, Velsu (by Elsu) at the Australasian Classic Yearling Sale in Auckland earlier this year.

Another Matter battled on gamely considering his tough run, while the Mystical Shark filly Mythology's run has "next-up" written all over it.
