Records tumbled at today's Pryde's EasiFeed Australasian Premier Trotting Sale with numbers up across the board. The harness racing trotting sale average this year increased a whopping 41.6 per cent on last year, the 2018 average of $21,490 substantially up on last year's $15,167. Sixty yearlings went through the ring, eight more than last year, and the top lot fetched $90,000 compared to last year's top lot, $55,000. All up, $1,074,500 in total sales was recorded today at Tabcorp Park Melton (more than $400,000 more than last year) with a clearance rate of 83 per cent (up 8% on last year). Importantly 12 of 41 sold made $20,000-plus last year, but this year 21 out of 50 sold made $20,000-plus. Ninety-one people registered to bid. "Today's results are extremely encouraging and showcase the confidence in the trotting gait in Victoria," Harness Racing Victoria's Emma Prosser said. "The quality of the catalogue certainly played an enormous role and I must congratulate the vendors and the preparers for the way the yearlings were presented." For the second year straight, Terang's Matthew Craven purchased the top lot Alderbaran Knox, Lot 35. Craven paid $90,000 for a striking Muscle Hill colt, out of Kyvalley Aldebaran - a full-brother to the 2017 sales topper he purchased 12 months ago. The colt was prepared by Danny and Melinda Thackeray on behalf of Aldebaran Lodge, which had 12 yearlings in today's sale. Craven paid $90,000 for this striking Muscle Hill colt, out of Kyvalley Aldebaran Aldebaran also produced "Aldebaran Stephan" (a colt by Pegasus Spur out of Sundonna) - a full-brother to the fastest Australasian-bred trotting mare Maori Time - which went for $60,000, "Aldebaran Dominic" (a colt by Andover Hall out of Aldebaran Dream), purchased by Jim Connelly for $50,000, and "Aldebaran Zander" (a colt by Muscle Hill out of Yield Boko) for $46,000. Chris Lang and Haley Toulmin also had a successful day, selling an Angus Hall-Miss Warbucks colt for $42,000 to Molander Racing after a spirited bidding contest, and an Angus Hall-Shes An Image colt to Rob Thompson for $41,000. The live stream of the APTS this year was well-viewed, with the number of people 'currently viewing' the stream hovering at about 150 for the bulk of the day. The $55,000 Australian record for a trotting yearling sold at auction is expected to be surpassed at this year's Pryde's EasiFeed Australasian Premier Trotting Sale to be held at Tabcorp Park Melton on Sunday March 11. A full-brother to the new Australasian mile record holder, Maori Time (Tr 1:51.5), Aldebaran Stephan will go under the hammer as Lot 55. Maori Time blitzed her rivals in the weekend's Group 1 Trotters Mile at Menangle for Brent Lilley and Todd McCarthy, taking her stake earnings to $419,801 and delivering connections a third Group 1. Lot 55 is the lynchpin of a 12-strong Aldebaran Park consignment, of Duncan McPherson, Nagambie. The grand looking colt is out of 2016-17 Victorian Broodmare of the Year Sundonna, a member of the famous Maori Miss tribe. Harness Racing Victoria (HRV) has amended its racing calendar to make Sunday, April 2, a racing-free day, enabling the industry to focus on the Australasian Premier Trotting Sale and Australian Pacing Gold Autumn Yearling Sale on that day. The Kilmore meeting set down for that date has been moved to Tuesday, April 4, and will remain a daytime fixture. "HRV has made this change in the interests of those important sales," HRV Interim General Manager Operations Shane Gloury said. "We want to give everyone the opportunity to attend and consider a purchase at the APTS and APG sales and having a racing-free day allows for this to happen." Cody Winnell Harness Racing Victoria

The sales topper at the 2016 Australasian Premier Trotting Sale held today Sunday the 13th of March in Melbourne is destined for the Brent Lilley harness racing stable. A colt by Majestic Son (sire of two-year-old Group 1 two-year-old winners Im Stately, Daenarys Targaryen and One Over Da Moon) out of proven producer Pinevale Ellason (Duchess Ella, Ruby Pinevale and All Star Angus) sold for $47,000 to Jim Connelly and will join the powerful Lilley yard. “Really pleased we got him,” Lilley said. “We had a good look around and thought he was the pick of the sale. On type obviously and breeding, he ticks both boxes.” Seller Terry Forster was “rapt” with the result. “We’re delighted with the result. It’ll keep the wheels turning,” he said. “We were hoping we’d go close to topping the sale because of the breeding and the progeny that this mare has had.” Preparer Pauleen Thomson was also thrilled with the result and she had an extra special day because two of the yearlings she prepared were among the top three priced sales of the day. Thomson prepared Lot 10, the sales topper, and Lot 13, a colt by Majestic Son out of Cloud Chaser which sold for $36,000. “I’m absolutely rapt. I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “He’s always been a really nice colt,” Thomson said of the Majestic Son/Pinevale Ellason colt. “He’s got a beautiful nature, no problems at all, just a really nice natured animal.” The second highest priced sale was Lot 31, a bay colt by Aldebaran Park first season sire Yield Boko out of Joyces Choice, prepared by Haley Toulmin. It went for $40,000. This year’s sale average was $14,900, up from last year’s average of $12,900 (an increase of about 7.5 per cent). 2016 Sale Results               Lot Sire Dam Sex Sales Price Purchaser Reserve 1 Bacardi Lindy Enjoy A Champers Filly Withdrawn N/A N/A 2 Pegasus Spur Its Billie Holiday Colt Passed In N/A $10,000 3 Fling It Black Curlew Filly Passed In N/A $15,000 4 Skyvalley Im Sonialeelee Filly $6,000 G Conroy   5 Angus Hall Petite Flair Filly $8,000 I Nicholas   6 Yankee Spider Maori Azolla Colt Passed In N/A $12,000 7 Imperial Count Icantremember Colt Withdrawn N/A N/A 8 Skyvalley Aldebaran Deegan Colt $9,500 A Ashwood   9 Majestic Son Missgoodytwoshoes Filly $14,500 L Fitzpatrick   10 Majestic Son Pinevale Ellason Colt $47,000 KPC Racing   11 Brylin Boyz Shez Allrighty Colt $8,000 S Thompson   12 The Pres Miriama Filly $6,000 Z Cauchi   13 Majestic Son Cloud Chaser Colt $36,000 M Caldow   14 Yield Boko Kyvalley Bling Colt $9,000 L Justice   15 Lucky Chucky Charlotte Galleon Colt $13,000 J Knight   16 CR Commando Kano Classic Colt Passed In N/A $15,000 17 Yield Boko Aldebaran Crumpet Colt $15,000 Y Males   18 Majestic Son Singing Creek Colt Withdrawn N/A N/A 19 Tennotrump Eagles Image Colt $8,000 P Mellington   20 Yield Boko Aldebaran Queenie Filly $19,000 D Scott   21 Majestic Son Ostensibly Colt Passed In N/A $10,000 22 Angus Hall Idoido Colt Passed In N/A $35,000 23 Muscle Hill Aftanoondelite Colt Passed In N/A $50,000 24 Yield Boko Aldebaran Revenue Filly $12,000 N Shinn   25 Majestic Son Missy Calder Filly Withdrawn N/A N/A 26 Pegasus Spur Lover Or Loser Colt $8,000 A Alchin   27 Bad Boy Truscott Poet Laureate Filly $10,000 C Murphy   28 Yield Boko Aldebaran Sunset Colt $16,000 M Taranto   29 Angus Hall Running Pinevale Gelding $13,000 I Caruana   30 Muscle Hill Starcus Colt $22,000 B Lilley   31 Yield Boko Joyces Choice Colt $40,000 G Webster   32 Bacardi Lindy Ima Tartan Tease Filly $15,000 W Agostino   33 Majestic Son Maori Road Filly $31,000 Raceapacer   34 Yield Boko Countess Angela Colt Withdrawn N/A N/A 35 Angus Hall Flash And Flair Colt $27,000 M Craven   36 Down Under Muscles Dodo Rocket Filly $30,000 D Aiken   37 Armbro Invasion Betty Cuthbert Filly $8,000 S Cameron   38 Yield Boko Bromac Aldebaran Filly $9,000 D Aitkin   39 Framework Pepperell Dargent Filly $4,000 F Cauchi   40 Majestic Son Lindys Two Step Filly $9,000 B Edwards   41 Kyvalley Blur Aldebaran Hall Colt $15,000 M Craven   42 Yield Boko Notnow Itstooearly Colt Withdrawn N/A N/A 43 Down Under Muscles Elite Action Colt $4,500 Veritas Holdings   44 Yankee Spider Lunar Landing Colt Passed In N/A $50,000 45 Bacardi Lindy Cruzenthepacific Filly $10,000 E Tormey   46 Yield Boko Maori Lindy Colt $11,500 MC Family Trust   47 Bacardi Lindy Docmelfi Filly $11,000 M Taranto   48 Armbro Variable La Cousu Colt $15,000 A Gath   49 Yankee Spider Stand On Me Filly $10,000 J Shelley   50 Down Under Muscles Melpark Sunrise Filly $12,000 T Bradley   51 Skyvalley Aldebaran Pearl Colt $8,000 Tonn Pty Ltd       Cody Winnell Harness Racing Victoria

Last Sunday’s Australasian Premier Trotting Sale at Tabcorp Park Melton saw a 20 per cent spike in registered bidders. While the overall average price was down on previous years, $12,941 compared to $16,359 last year, APTS promoters said this was in partly due to only 40 lots passing through the ring. “We would expect that number to jump around a bit with only 40 lots going through,” Harness Racing Victoria’s Vaughn Lynch said. “We would have liked a higher average, but we understand there are several factors behind it dropping. “There was less competition than usual at the bottom end of the sale, meaning there were bargains for the astute buyer.” Lynch stated it was great to see more bidders than usual with “strong competition at the top end of the sale seeing several potential buyers going home disappointed”. The sale topper was a striking bay colt by Angus Hall out of unraced Muscles Yankee mare Bromac Aldebaran, which sold for $38,000. “He’s got good confirmation and a good pedigree,” said Richard Matthews, who made the successful bid. “I’ve had a bit more luck with the trotters over the years for whatever reason. I bought a broodmare from New Zealand, Invasions Pride. She didn’t race a long time but she threw a trotter called Let Me Thru, who ran second in an Inter Dominion when he was only a five-year-old. “The mare’s progeny have produced about $740,000 worth of stake winnings.” The second-highest priced purchase was Lot 15, a bay colt by the sire of the fastest two-year-old in history Muscle Hill, from Calder Fury, which went for $37,000. A sister to exciting mare Barefoot Sally (an impressive winner at Melton on Saturday night) went for $22,000, the filly by Bacardi Lindy – sire of Claudys Princess – out of Strapon. Scott’s Creek horseman Anthony O’Connor purchased two yearlings at the sale, Lot 20 a filly by Skyvalley from Maori Road for $5000 and Lot 31 Aldebaran Doc, a colt by Skyvalley from Aldebaran Deegan for $4000. “You can’t breed them for that price,” O’Connor said. “It’s worth rolling the dice at that price. “My son Nicholas and I wanted a trotter and we were looking for a filly, so to get into a good family of trotters is great. “The other one, I had a few mates who wanted to race one, so we’ll probably go quarter shares.” The APTS finished off a big weekend of Victorian trotting, which saw New Zealand star Stent win the $300,000 Group One Pryde’s Easifeed Great Southern Star on Saturday night. “This is the third year for the Australasian Premier Trotting Sale and we’re looking forward to being able to build on it further in coming years,” Lynch said. 2015 AUSTRALASIAN PREMIER TROTTING SALE RESULTS Lot 1: Colt by Lawman out of Speedy Naomi – Withdrawn Lot 2: Filly by Eilean Donon out of Kyvalley Bling – $9000 to Chris Lang Jr Lot 3: Colt by Bacardi Lindy out of Arnikas Pride – Passed In Lot 4: Colt by Angus Hall out of Bromac Aldebaran - $38,000 to Gatto Pty Ltd Lot 5: Filly by Skyvalley out of Countessa Hest – $7000 to Glenn Conroy Lot 6: Filly by Yankee Spider out of Catchya Kasey – Passed In Lot 7: Filly by Bacardi Lindy out of Cruzenthepacific - $6000 to Terence Howard Lot 8: Colt by Angus Hall out of Maoris Dream - $30,000 to Ian Hunter Lot 9: Filly by Yankee Spider out of Stand On Me - $10,000 to Maree Caldow Lot 10: Filly by Bacardi Lindy out of Spring Fly – Passed In Lot 11: Filly by Skyvalley out of Sundons Babe – $7000 to Greg Scott Lot 12: Colt by Angus Hall out of Poignant – $30,000 to Maree Caldow Lot 13: Filly by Skyvalley out of Maori Lindy – $4000 to Glenn Conroy Lot 14: Colt by Bacardi Lindy out of Maori Moments – $5000 to Joe Pace Lot 15: Colt by Muscle Hill out of Calder Fury – $37,000 to Jim Connelly’s KPC Racing Lot 16: Filly by Angus Hall out of Aldebaran Maori – $18,000 to Blundell Family Trust Lot 17: Colt by Bacardi Lindy out of Maori Missile – Withdrawn Lot 18: Colt by Bacardi Lindy out of Docmelfi – $10,000 to Jayne Davies Lot 19: Colt by Metropolitan out of Countess Angela – $5000 to Greg and Denise Muir Lot 20: Filly by Skyvalley out of Maori Road – $5000 to Anthony O’Connor Lot 21: Colt by Kyvalley Blur out of Kyvalley Kitty – Passed In Lot 22: Colt by Muscle Mass out of Queens Rhapsody – $10,000 to Brent Lilley Lot 23: Colt by Skyvalley out of Aldebaran Honey – $4000 to Russell Commens Lot 24: Colt by Muscle Mass out of Icantremember – Withdrawn Lot 25: Colt by Sundon out of La Tonneralla – $15,000 to Paddy Lee Lot 26: Colt by Muscles Yankee out of Elusive Charm – $32,000 to Don Smith Lot 27: Colt by Skyvalley out of Aldebaranfavourite – $9000 to Brent Lilley Lot 28: Filly by Angus Hall out of Flaming Action – $9000 to B Cabria Lot 29: Colt by Bacardi Lindy out of A Poem Kept – $11,000 to John Murdoch Lot 30: Colt by Bacardi Lindy out of Modern Maori – Withdrawn Lot 31: Colt by Skyvalley out of Aldebaran Deegan – $4000 to Anthony O’Connor Lot 32: Filly by Yankee Spider out of Positive Logic – $8000 to Michael Scandolera Lot 33: Filly by Muscle Mass out of Illawong Chloe – Withdrawn Lot 34: Colt by Bacardi Lindy out of Charlotte Galleon – $7000 to Steven Hall Lot 35: Filly by Bacardi Lindy out of Strapon – $22,000 to WJ and MD Cameron Lot 36: Filly by Skyvalley out of Aldebaran Breeze – $22,000 to David Scott Lot 37: Colt by Armbro Variable out of Gladys Emanuel – $8500 to Mario Azzopardi Lot 38: Filly by Skyvalley out of Aldebaran Revenue – $5000 to Blake Fitzpatrick Lot 39: Colt by Armbro Invasion out of Im Mumbo Jumbo – Passed In Lot 40: Colt by Pegasus Spur out of Lets Be Happy – $25,000 to Michael Taranto Lot 41: Colt by Skyvalley out of Aldebaran Hall – Withdrawn Lot 42: Colt by Bacardi Lindy out of All Finesse – Passed In Lot 43: Colt by Tennotrump out of Mystic Jewel – $9000 to Tubbs/Sugars Lot 44: Colt by Bacardi Lindy out of Seek And Destroy – $6500 to S Hayes Lot 45: Filly by Skyvalley out of Aldebaran Sunset – $8000 to Chris Lang Jr Lot 46: Colt by Fling It out of Keyfield – $4000 to Olivia Berg By Cody Winnell

The third Australasian Premier Trotting Sale was held today at Tabcorp Park Melton and the promoters must be disappointed with the overall result. The first sale in 2013 averaged $15,846 which climbed slightly in 2014 to $16,359. Today saw the average drop to $12,941 which is over a 20% decrease over last year which is disappointing especially in light of the 23% increase achieved at the Australian Pacing Gold Sale just last weekend. The top lot today was Lot 4, a striking Angus Hall colt who is the first foal from the unraced Muscles Yankee mare Bromac Aldebaran. The colt was knocked down for a healthy $38,000. Bromac Aldebaran is from Spiritual Powers who is a full sister to Our Super Force ($90,985) who was New Zealand two year old trotter of the year and a half sister to Real Force ($165,592) who won an Interdominion Final as a four year old. Another half sister to Spiritual Powers in Chiola's Luck is the dam of Sundon's Luck ($164,264) who was three year old trotter of the year in New Zealand. A grand-daughter of Spiritual Powers is the dam of this years Dominion Handicap winner Jaccka Justy ($231,663) and his full brother Jaccka Jack ($125,532) The third dam of todays sale topper is the Super Bowl mare Super Brenda who was imported from North America by National Bloodstock in the late 1980s. With the strength of the family behind the Angus Hall colt it is no wonder he made what he did. Lot 35 which was a Barcardi Lindy filly from the handy Straphanger mare in Strapon ($32,570) got a very timely boost last night at Tabcorp Park Melton when her full sister Barefoot Sally won her fifth race in impressive fashion. On top of that the filly was a lovely type herself and after some spirited bidding was knocked down for $22,000.
